Ablative Batts and Mastic and Compound

Fire Stopping and Penetration Sealing

Penetration sealing systems are a fundamental requirement of the fire safety design in buildings and are vital in maintaining compartmentation and preventing the spread of fire and smoke. Building Regulations, Approved Documents and LPCB Design Guide recognise that the quality of the installation of fire stopping and penetration sealing is crucial to the performance of any fire stop seal.

The general principal of firestopping with respect to Approved Document B is that products, systems or materials, shall be used at the position where services penetrate through separating elements to reinstate the fire resistance performance of the element.

Our teams of installers undertake fire stopping to all service penetrations and/or voids in fire compartment walls or floors to ensure compliance with the specified fire strategy and Part B. We install various systems comprising ablative coated mineral fibre batt, gypsum-based fire mortars and intumescent mastic sealants. These systems and materials provide cost-effective solutions and compliance with current legislation and provide protection against fire and smoke as well as enhancing acoustic performance and air sealing properties.

Elite Fire Solutions only install products that are third party certified and we work closely with the manufacturers to ensure they are being used in the way in which they have been tested.

We are also UKAS certified Third Party Installers through IFC Certification Ltd who are our accreditation body. Please click here to view our certificate.

As an Accredited Installer, we trust this provides confirmation that all Fire Stopping systems installed by Elite will comply with the specified fire strategy and Part B building regulations. Using an Accredited Installer of Fire Protection also provides the following benefits:

  • To ensure that Fire Protection materials are installed correctly and as tested.
  • Work is carried out to agreed industry standards of quality.
  • Suitably trained site installation engineers, supervisors and managers.
  • Site Inspections by third parties to ensure works are installed correctly.
  • Correct products and thicknesses are installed for the required fire protection.
  • Company procedures and records are regularly checked and inspected.
  • Traceability of installed systems via independent audits and company records.
  • Third party backed Certificate of Conformity issued on project completion.

All penetration sealing works carried by Elite Fire Solutions are recorded with a unique seal reference number with each penetration labelled with an individual sticker and marked on a drawing to identify the location of each penetration. Upon completion of the project, a copy of all record documentation is then forwarded onto client.

Elite Fire Solutions can also provide the option for the penetration sealing works to be logged and recorded electronically. This provides customers with online access of the works completed giving all parties peace of mind that programme dates and budgets are being utilised correctly. From this we can then provide electronic reports pinpointing all installs on uploaded site plans along with a description of each install and a digital photograph.

Please discuss this option with Elite Fire Solutions prior to commencement so we can advise of the benefits this system can provide for your project.

Fire Stopping Standard Details

Ablative Coated Batts

Ablative Coated Batts are a cost effective, lightweight answer to most fire stopping requirements and can be tailored to fit into most openings. They act as an airseal barrier to reinstate the fire resistance and acoustic performances of concrete floors, masonry walls and dry wall systems when voids have been created for the passage of services and can provide up to 240 minutes integrity and insulation.

Ablative Coated Batts can also be used as a head-of-wall barrier to extend the fire resistance and acoustic performances of  masonry walls.

Firestopping Compound

Fire Compound is a formulated gypsum based mortar which provides strength and is light weight which, when mixed with water, can be either poured or trowelled to provide a fire resisting seal around and between service penetrations in walls and floors.

Fire compound systems are particularly designed for use where a loading of the penetration is applicable, such as service risers, plant room floors and large floor penetrations as this system provides a rigid seal. Fire compounds are quick setting to provide a fire and smoke seal offering up to 240 minutes fire resistance.

Intumescent Sealant

Intumescent Sealant systems are water based acrylic intumescent or silicone based fire protection sealants and are applied by a mastic gun or trowel applied. They are used to provide fire protection to gaps, movement joints and seals around penetrating services where testing indicates their suitability. In addition, they are also used in conjunction with Ablative Batts in all forms of fire resisting construction.

Adhering to most types of surface, when cured forms a non-hardening seal; preventing the passage of smoke, toxic gases and fire for up to 240 minutes fire protection.
